History of Alternative Medicine

History has it that alternative medicine goes back 5000 years to Chinese traditional medicine, Indian (Ayuryedic medicine) and similar healing traditions in many cultures. The common belief was that the energy of the body had to be in harmony with the mind, body and spirit. A doctor merely facilitated the healing by identifying and taking away obstacles that would inevitably lead to a cure. Therapy included lifestyle changes, self-care and preventative measures.

Today, what we know of as complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) has roots going back 5,000 years to Chinese (traditional Chinese medicine), Indian (Ayurvedic medicine) and similar healing traditions. For thousands of years, these diverse medical traditions held a belief in the energy of the body and the need for harmony between mind, body and spirit. Doctor’s simply facilitated the healing process by identifying and removing obstacles.

Throughout most of the 19th century, doctors used the same skills as today’s herbalists, osteopaths and dieticians; they were generous with time and empathy, and relied on a good bedside manner. Prayer was important, as was “a change of air,” laxatives, bleeding and leeches. Right up until the early 20th century, sick people relied on much the same kind of therapies as their ancestors.

The decades following the Second World War brought significant changes. As GP and journalist, James Lefanu noted in his book, The Rise and Fall of Modern Medicine, written in the 50s, a series of medical breakthroughs proved beyond a doubt that previous attempts at healing were nothing more than mere quackery. New medical breakthroughs included the discovery of penicillin, cortisone (a powerful anti-inflammatory medicine), streptomycin (a powerful antibiotic that is effective in treating tuberculosis), insulin (to treat diabetes) and chlorpromazine (an anti-psychotic that controls schizophrenia). Open-heart surgery, hip replacements, kidney transplants, intensive care and successful vaccination programs saved and improved the quality of countless of millions of lives.

It’s no surprise that so much power to alter human destiny would lead, as Lefanu suggests, “to the resultant abandonment of homely remedies such as massage, manipulation and dietary advice, only for them to be taken up by alternative practitioners.” This is exactly what happened – with a dramatic explosion in the growth of ‘alternative’ therapies throughout the second half of the 20th century. Alongside modern medicine, CAM began to develop as an entirely separate discipline – contemptuous of the achievements of mainstream medicine, while at the same time dismissed by mainstream practitioners as ineffective and fraudulent. For most people, getting the best from mainstream and alternative medicine was a delicate operation. Those who opted for both mainstream and alternative medical care found that the best strategy was to remain quite to avoid criticism. Those who did try to use both services learnt that in order to avoid criticism.

Does My Auto or Homeowners Insurance Police Cover Mailbox Damage?

Since 2013, the United States Postal Service has furthered a move that will save the agency billions of dollars. By requiring owners of newly constructed homes to use curbside mailboxes like those used by millions of other homeowners and renters, associated costs will be cut significantly.

Though the change favors cost-cutting efforts, it does involve a degree of inconvenience for those used to the traditional delivery at the door front. That downside, however, does not compare to the real risk the newly introduced location – near the road – presents: exposure to damage from a colliding auto or other type of vehicle.

Due to the fact that mailboxes located at the side of the road are in close proximity of constant car and truck movement, there is an extremely heightened risk of them getting hit and damaged.

Can I File a Related Insurance Claim?

Should another driver hit your mailbox, be sure to ask for his phone number and address as well as his driver’s license information. Following that, make an official police report and file an insurance claim with the driver’s auto insurance. Buy another mailbox like the one you are replacing and save the sales slip so that there is cost proof for insurance recompense.

As life goes, chances are you may not be home if and when your mailbox gets damaged by another car. Then what, right?

Check your doors for contact info that may be left by a summoned police officer or the driver him or herself. You can also call the police and see if there was a police report filed about the accident. In the event you do not discover a note with pertinent contact information or anything about an associated police report, be sure to file a hit-and-run accident police report as soon as possible. If that leads you nowhere, you can still opt for a homeowners insurance claim. Be prepared for either a flat out denial or a denial based on not meeting deductible requisites, though.

In the event your mailbox retained damage due to vandalism, you can do either of the following:

• Make a police report so that you will get repaid by the vandal when apprehended as part of a court decision.

• You can also see if your homeowners insurance policy will cover you for an act of vandalism of this sort. Consult with your independent insurance agency for a professional take on the matter.

Types of Insurance Agents: A Basic Guide

There are many times in your life when you’ll need to purchase insurance. Some of those times are fairly straightforward, and you can easily compare plans on your own and make an informed decision. However, there are also times when choosing the right plan, or even finding out what types of plans are available are not so clear-cut. For example, when you’re buying insurance for your small business, when you’re buying house insurance, or when you’re buying life insurance, you are making some very important decisions about a very complex topic.

When you are shopping for insurance that could impact your life in such a serious way, it’s a good idea to find an insurance agent to help you decide on a policy that’s right for you. There are three basic types of insurance professionals who can be of assistance:

Independent Insurance Agent

An independent insurance agent is an agent that is not in the employ of a single insurance company. Typically, the agent will work with a select number of companies, helping clients to choose policies from one of them. This can be helpful because different insurance company’s policies may have different strengths and weaknesses, with which the agent is familiar. An independent agent is a good option if you’re not sure which company you want to go to, but you know that the price ranges and coverages they offer will be comparable to one another. In essence, you just need the agent to make sure you’re getting the best deal.

Captive Insurance Agent

A captive insurance agent is one which works only for one specific company. Obviously, this type of agent is the right choice when you already know you want a policy from that insurance company. These agents will help you to compare different policies to determine which coverage and price point are right for you. They’ll just be policies from the same company, that’s all. Sometimes clients already hold one type of insurance with a particular company, and prefer to buy new policies from the same company.

Insurance Broker

Insurance brokers aren’t agents in that they do not directly sell policies. Working with insurance brokers is typically reserved for the most complex insurance needs. Insurance brokers contact agents from many different insurance companies to determine what policies are available, how much they cost, and what type of coverage you can hope to receive. An insurance broker may even negotiate with insurance agents to bring the price down.

Another reason you may wish to use an insurance broker is if you want a highly customized insurance policy. If you’re looking for an insurance agency that has policies which can be tailored to your exact needs, an insurance broker could be a helpful resource. However, more and more insurance agencies are recognizing that there is a large demand for personalized policies. As a result, you may find an agency which offers such policies relatively easily, wherever you are.

Uncover the Cultural Secrets and Let the History Out of the Bag With Cuba Holidays

More and more people in the know are adding Cuba to their list of must-visit holiday destinations. Cuba is the most highly populated island in the Caribbean and apart from a huge diversity of backgrounds and cultures, the country has a fascinating, recognisable history.

Mention Fidel Castro, Che Guevara, cigars and Cuba instantly springs to mind.

Cuba has been an independent country since declaring its independence from Spain in 1898 and in 1902 Cuba became a republic. During your Cuba holidays the best place to soak up the history of the island is in Havana, and what better way to feel the roots of Cuba than to sit in the sunshine outside an authentic Cuban cafe, taking in the architecture and music of Cuba. It's a good way to meet the locals and hear about the history first hand.

During your time in Havana, you need to spend at least half a day at the Museum of the Revolution (Museo de la Revolucion) in Old Havana. The museum contains exhibits that follow the history of Cuba and the peculiar development of this country until the present time. It is housed in former President Batista's residence which was also once the headquarters of the Cuban government before Castro's revolution took over. Designed by Belgian architects, the building was completed in the 1920s, boasting a diverse mix of architectural elements and being most worthy of a visit. Within the main courtyard you can still see the bullet holes from then the revolutionaries tried to take over the presidential residence. Outside in the grounds of the museum is the Granma memorial, a huge glass enclosure that houses the Granma yacht which was used by Fidel Castro and his revolutionaries when they came from Mexico to Cuba to forge the revolution.

Most people are familiar with the old American cars from the 50s that are still used in Cuba, and there is no better way to see the classic cars than in the car museum (although they are still roaming freely in the streets). Again the museum is housed in a historic building dating back from 1891. All of the cars in the exhibition are unique to Havana in some way or another.

If you have the time during your Cuba holidays , the small Farmacia Taquechel museum is well worth an hour or so of your travel itinerary. The building was originally a house before being turned into a pharmacy in 1889. Today the house is home to some interesting pharmacy and laboratory artefacts as well as a small shop selling homeopathic medicinal items.

Prescription Drugs Versus Herbal Medicine

People in all cultures have used herbs as natural remedies for centuries. Herbs have passed the test of time and have proved to be safe and effective. Millions of people have recovered from various ailments. Unlike prescription drugs, with herbal medicine, each diagnosis and treatment is tailored to fit the individual. Today, increasing number of people are seeking herbal treatment as an alternative to synthetic drugs that could be hazardous to health in the long run.

It may be weird that modern drugs are being replaced with grandma's powders and teas, but with the knowledge that most modern drugs are synthetic versions of plant substances, people are opting for the original.

There was a time when herbs have been dismissed and herbal treatments not valued, but things are changing as herbs contain properties that are far superior to synthetic drugs and are more in tune with the human body. They create far fewer and harmless side effects if any, and bestow 'side' benefits instead of side effects. There are several side effects of prescription drugs, some long lasting and some which cause permanent damage or impairment to the body parts. To cure one part, another part of the body has to be compromised, and this can be totally avoided with herbal medicine.

Let us take the example of 'ginkgo biloba', which improves memory and also boosts blood circulation in the legs and arms. 'Garlic' is used to enhance the immune system and also lower cholesterol.

Herbal medicine has proven to fulfill roles roles that synthetic drugs cannot. The whole range of adaptogens found in herbal medicine have no equivalent in modern medicine.

Europe has a stronger history of herb use when compared to the United States. European doctors always retained an interest and skill in prescribing herbal medicine in conjunction with modern drugs.

The difference between treatment with modern medicine and herbal medicine is enormous. When treating, herbal medicine practitioners pay attention to all aspects of the individual's health, looking at building their health and not just covering up a specific ailment. Another difference is that, herbal medicine doctors look not only at the chemical and molecular components of herbs but also their energetic aspects. Herbal medicine believes that all living things, including plants contain energy. The Chinese call this vital energy force 'qi'. Where the modern medicine is concerned about treating the illness itself, Chinese medicine looks at this illness as a blockage to the vital life force. It aims at removing that blockage.

This concept is better understood with the example of acupuncture. Acupuncture is based on unblocking flow and the 'unseen' energy pathways of the human body. The huge success of acupuncture speaks for itself. The right herb to open the blockage is all it takes to allow the body's energy to flow, thus healing.

All this certainly may seem strange to the mindset of modern medicine. But herbs have been proven to work for the human body without any serious side effects.

Herbs are the original source for at least 25% of all pharmaceutical drugs. For example, morphine which is used as a pain killer, comes from opium poppy; digitalis, a cardiac stimulant, comes from foxglove; resperine, a sedative and antihypertensive, comes from rauwolfia (Indian snakeroot).

While modern medicine looks for active ingredients in a plant and extract it and discard the rest of the plant, herbal medicine depends on the synergistic action of the complete plant, to take the benefit from the thousands of compounds present in the plant. While prescription drugs have a rapid and targeted action, which is also the reason why side effects are caused; herbs tend to work slowly but gradually, in the process strengthening the body's defenses over a period of time.

Of course, herbs too have to be taken with caution and used responsibly, and preferably under guidance. For example, ephedra should never be used by people with weak hearts, especially in combination with synthetic ephedrine. In any case, if one herb causes a problem, there are others that can be taken.

Introduction of Industrial Designs

Industrial design refers to the original activity of achieving a formal or ornamental appearance for mass-produced items. In a legal sense industrial design refers to the right approved in several countries pursuant to a registration system to protect the unique ornamental as well as non-functional characteristics of an industrial article or product that result from design activity. Visual appeal is one of the considerations that influence the decision of consumers to prefer one product over another. It happens mostly in areas where a variety of products performing the same function is accessible in the market. In these situations, if the technical performance of the different products offered by diverse manufacturers is comparatively equal, then aesthetic appeal as well as cost will determine the consumer's choice. The legal protection of industrial designs thus serves the significant function of protecting one of the individual elements by which manufacturers achieve market success.

The emergence of protection for industrial designs is closely connected with the development of industrialization as well as methods of mass production. In the United Kingdom, the first law giving protection to industrial designs was passed on 1787. It gave protection for a period of two months to every person who shall invent design and print. The gift and significance of design in the growing textile industries was recognized. Growing recognition of the expansion of industrialization and of the possible application of methods of mass production to most areas of manufacture lead to the continuing extension of design protection until the consolidation achieved in the Designs Act of 1842. It extended protection to any new and unique design Whether such design was applicable to the ornamenting of any article of manufacture or of any substance. Design was meaning recognized as a fundamental element of all production and manufacture.

A somewhat similar development of design protection took place in France. The Law on Literary and Artistic Property of 1793 was applied in certain cases to the protection of designs. The growth of the textile industries in particular soon led to the enactment in 1806 of a special law dealing with industrial designs. The Law of March 18, 1806 established a special committee in Lyon accountable for receiving deposits of designs and for regulating disputes between manufacturers concerning designs. While at first intended for industries in Lyon particularly those manufacturing silk, the system of deposit furthermore regulation by particular council was extended to other cities.
